Background of the Study
Urban centers in Nigeria are melting pots where multiple languages converge, influencing the evolution of Nigerian English. Historical language convergence refers to the process whereby distinct linguistic varieties blend over time due to prolonged contact, migration, and socio-economic interaction. In cities such as Lagos and Abuja, the interaction between indigenous languages and colonial legacies has contributed to a distinct variety of English characterized by unique vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation patterns (Adejumo, 2023). The convergence phenomenon is driven by factors such as trade, education, and mass media, leading to the emergence of hybrid forms that facilitate communication among diverse groups (Okoro, 2024). Researchers have documented that the convergence process has both standardized and innovated language forms, creating a dynamic linguistic environment. This study employs historical documentation, sociolinguistic interviews, and corpus analysis to investigate how urbanization has driven language convergence in Nigerian English over time (Nwachukwu, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Although language convergence in urban centers is well acknowledged, systematic research on the historical convergence processes shaping Nigerian English is limited. Existing studies tend to focus on contemporary usage, leaving gaps in our understanding of how convergence evolved over decades. This gap hinders the formulation of informed language policies that could support the rich hybrid identity of Nigerian English (Adejumo, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To trace historical convergence processes in Nigerian English.
  2. To analyze linguistic features resulting from language contact in urban centers.
  3. To assess socio-economic factors driving convergence.

Research Questions

  1. What historical factors have contributed to Nigerian English convergence?
  2. What linguistic features characterize this convergence?
  3. How does urbanization shape language convergence dynamics?

Significance of the Study
The study informs language policy and urban education by clarifying how historical convergence has shaped Nigerian English. Its findings will help preserve the language’s hybrid identity while supporting inclusive communication strategies.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on Nigerian English in urban centers and does not address rural language dynamics or other language pairs.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Language Convergence: The process by which languages become more similar due to contact.
  2. Nigerian English: A variety of English influenced by Nigeria’s multilingual context.
  3. Urban Centers: Metropolitan areas characterized by high population diversity.
